Understanding IS 7903 — The Indian Truck Tarpaulin Standard

IS 7903 is the specification most transporters and fleet buyers should be asking for by name.

IS 7903 ("Waterproof cotton tarpaulins — specification") and its PVC counterpart set out weight, tensile strength, water-proofness, and dimensional tolerance requirements that a legitimate truck tarpaulin must meet.

Key clauses transport buyers should insist on: tensile strength (both warp and weft), tearing strength, water-proofness after flexing, and heat resistance. A supplier that cannot show test reports against these clauses is not selling to standard.

When procuring for GeM or state transport tenders, the specification will often reference IS 7903 directly and mandate a valid third-party test certificate no older than 12 months.
