PP Rope Strength and Size Guide for Indian Buyers
Diameter, breaking strength, working load limit and where PP rope beats nylon or manila.
Polypropylene rope is the workhorse of Indian farms, mandis, transport yards and construction sites. It floats, it does not rot, it shrugs off water and most chemicals, and it costs a fraction of nylon.
Breaking strength scales roughly with the square of diameter. As an indicative guide for 3-strand twisted PP: 6 mm around 500 kg, 8 mm around 900 kg, 10 mm around 1,400 kg, 12 mm around 2,000 kg, 16 mm around 3,500 kg. Always divide breaking strength by a safety factor of at least 5 to get a sane working load limit — more if the rope will be shock-loaded or knotted, because a knot can cut strength by up to half.
Choose PP over nylon when you want low stretch, buoyancy and low cost. Choose nylon when you need shock absorption, such as towing. Choose PP over manila or jute almost always for outdoor use, because natural fibre rots.
UV is the main enemy. UV-stabilised PP rope holds its strength for years in South Indian sun; unstabilised rope can lose a third of its strength in a single hot season. Seal cut ends with heat to stop fraying, and store coiled in shade rather than folded in sunlight.
